Singer-songwriter and pianist Pokkisham weaves jazz harmony, soulful melodies and poetic lyrics through her songs to take her audiences on a journey full of emotional and musical twists and turns.
Forged from the foundation of a rich musical heritage, combining early exposure to Carnatic South Indian musical traditions alongside a training in Western classical music, Pokkisham also fell into a rabbit hole of love for jazz, funk and soul and has never climbed out. Her musical landscape further changed upon discovery of great singer-pianists like Billy Joel, Elton John, Tori Amos and Nina Simone as well as musical poets of varied styles, from Joni Mitchell to Jill Scott.
Pokkisham has been a long-term professional singer/pianist on the UK jazz scene, playing for luminaries such as Quincy Jones and sharing the stage with Sam Smith back when he was a fledgling artist. Her performing highlights include legendary venues such as Ronnie Scott’s, Pizza Express Jazz Club, the 606 Club and festivals including Love Supreme festival and the Montreux Jazz Festival. Her songwriting has always been a big part of her life and she is now reaching out to be more visible as a songwriter, producer and arranger of her own material.
Unafraid to blend styles and subject matter, her songs and voice have a depth and musicality that will hook you from the first note. This is her first time playing at The Bear and she’ll be showcasing original material, including songs from her EP due out later this year, as well as charting some of the songwriters and music that have influenced her writing.
Featuring an incredible band of musicians including Jason Walsh (bass), Jimmy Norden (drums) and John Worth (guitar) and some special guests.
