SARA COLMAN: A CELEBRATION OF JONI MITCHELL

Bristol-born vocalist Sara Colman makes her debut at The Bear, bringing her quintet which features Rebecca Nash (piano, keyboard), Steve Banks (guitar), Ben Markland (bass) and Jonathan Silk (drums).

The ensemble will be celebrating Joni Mitchell’s 80th birthday this year, with music from their album Ink On a Pin: A Celebration of Joni Mitchell. The performance will feature arrangements of songs drawn from Blue, Court & Spark, Hejira, The Hissing of Summer Lawns, Clouds, Wild Things Run Fast and Turbulent Indigo.

Inspired by her love of classic songwriting and instinctive improvisational energy, Joni Mitchell’s work has long had a profound impact on Sara. Her awareness of Joni’s unfailing ability to write songs which are uniquely personal and yet universal has deepened as she discovers more about what inspired her to write them.

In recent years, Sara has worked with some of the leading lights in British music, including Laura Mvula, Liane Carroll and Mahalia. She has performed at the BBC Proms, and in 2019 she was commissioned by The Canales Project (US) to write a song celebrating the life of Sakena Yacoobi, an Afghan activist.

Fans of Joni Mitchell and of improvised music will delight in this rare opportunity to hear Mitchell’s music performed live and in the fresh, innovative interpretations of a timeless repertoire.

At the heart of it all is Colman’s unfailingly beautiful, richly expressive voice…
— Jazzwise ★★★★
A class act, richly evocative with immaculate performances... situated in the hinterland somewhere between jazz and the territory of the singer-songwriter
— Jazz Mann
Not only does Sara do full justice to the music and lyrics of a song, she also shares the music with her audience with a deep generosity of spirit... and she does it all with wit, with grace and wisdom
