From London via Lagos, charismatic chanteuse Sister Cookie and her band will take you on an eclectic excursion into the roots & fruits of black music. Old sounds, new tricks. Sensuous, seductive and moody.
Growing up in Lagos, she began teaching herself piano at the age of 3, playing along to TV jingles and adverts on a keyboard her parents bought second hand from a jumble sale. Then there was her parents record collection - her dad was into jazz, blues, and classical, and her mum was into soul, disco, reggae, and the more homegrown sounds of highlife, afrobeat, and juju.
As well as possessing a distinctive voice that's tender and sweet when it needs to be, she is a composer who writes honest and raw songs about pain, heartbreak, suffering - all that bad (meaning good) stuff.
Unafraid to wear musical roots but with her head firmly in the future, Sister Cookie’s music illustrates the pillars of emotional life and is delivered with potency, empathy, and a quiet authority. It’s great to have her back at The Bear.
