TIM PENN & THE SECOND LINE

Cooking up a hot gumbo of New Orleans R&B, Tim Penn brings the sounds of the American Deep South to The Bear Club with his band The Second Line.

The band draws on the music of Fats Domino, Professor Longhair, Dr John, Allen Toussaint and then stirs it up with a pinch of Ray Charles, Tom Waits and Tim’s own original compositions; a recipe that has led to a string of sold out shows in London at venues such as Upstairs at Ronnie’s and Pizza Express.

In Tim’s own words, “this is the blues, but with a great big smile on its face”.

Over the last few years, The Second Line has firmly established its reputation as one of the top New Orleans R&B bands in London. If you like the Crescent City’s rich heritage of rhythm and blues mixed in with a nod back to the jazz greats like Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton, then this is one band you won’t want to miss.

Tim Penn has long been one of the most popular pianists on the blues and roots scene in London. Going back to the 1970s, Tim was a member of Dorris Henderson’s Eclection, and also the Kevin Coyne band alongside Andy Summers (The Police) and Gordon Smith. For the last six years, he has played piano and accordion with The Cadillac Kings.

Scintillating piano-based artistry

Right from the outset, the album sounds like it was recorded at a different time, sometime in the past when music was music...
— Dale Storr
These guys are amazing! Their popularity and presence grow with each gig they do for us. Not surprising with the exceptional level of talent, commitment and all-round positive energy they bring to every performance
