Golden Shoals is an exceptional American fiddle and guitar duo inspired by the enduring spirit of Appalachian mountain music. They play what some might call bluegrass or old-time country music in a style that is bang up-to-date.
Drawing on Americana, bluegrass, folk, jazz, and more, they blend traditional and contemporary influences to entertaining effect. Amy Alvey and Mark Kilianski formed their musical partnership back in 2013 in Boston, where they both studied at the prestigious Berklee College of Music.
With a lively stage presence complementing their impressive musicianship and glorious vocal harmonies, often switching instruments between fiddle, two guitars, and banjo, their original songs have been compared to Gillian Welch's, with the added edge of instrumental prowess informed by energetic old-time and bluegrass recordings.
Initially brought together by a mutual love of American folk music, Golden Shoals' sound has expanded to include country, Americana, indie, and experimental influences. This expansion allows them to move more freely beyond genre boundaries with their songwriting while still emanating a deep understanding of old-time and bluegrass music. Their songwriting comes across as simple, honest, and fresh to the ears.
